Shopify's DotDev 2026 sessions pointed to one clear shift: AI-powered product discovery now depends on structured data, not keyword ranking. Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol is already active on all stores, feeding product information to AI agents. Brands that clean up their catalogue data and metadata now will be the ones AI recommends first.

MindArc's Matt (Co-Founder & Director) and John (Head of Technology), sat in on Shopify's DotDev 2026 sessions and came back with one clear signal. Discoverability has quietly changed shape. It is not about ranking anymore. It is about whether your product data is structured well enough for an AI system to recommend it at all.

What is Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol, and why is it already active on your store?

The Universal Commerce Protocol is now live by default on every Shopify store. No setup, no toggle, co-developed with Google as an open standard. It is already rolling out in Australia. Treat it as a new channel, not a background feature. Google Search Central is calling agentic commerce the next major shift in how products get found. Shopify just made it the default.

What does Shopify's Catalogue API actually do for AI discoverability?

Shopify's Catalogue API isn't about improving search on your own site. It is about your products showing up in places they never existed before. Shopify's message to agencies was direct. Get metafields and metaobjects right, or your products stay invisible. Google made the same point from their side of the fence. Roughly 80% of the product listings that ChatGPT surfaces come directly from Google Shopping data, not from scraped pages. Two ecosystems, one rule. Structured data wins over scraped content, every time.

Why are AEO and GEO already showing up in client briefs?

Most merchants have already asked their agency about AI platform discoverability. Traditional SEO still has to work. Now it also has to carry the weight of AI discoverability, including feed data and metafields. More shoppers are researching on AI platforms than on traditional search. Google's own position backs this up. Real expertise and clean data behind the content is what AI systems weigh, not surface-level optimisation.

What early data supports AI discoverability as a real revenue factor?

Agentic commerce sessions are converting at a higher rate than organic search. Around half of AI-driven shopping sessions land straight on a product page, skipping the browse entirely. Sales and checkouts through agentic channels have doubled over the past six months. The strongest results so far sit in categories with clean, comparable attributes, electronics being the standout. Clean data is no longer a nice-to-have. It is the difference between showing up and not showing up.

What challenges in AI product discoverability remain unsolved?

Formal product data is easy for AI to read. Merchandising judgment is not. The stylist logic, the fitment relationships, the calls a good merchandiser makes instinctively about what goes with what- none of that lives in a clean field yet. That is the next frontier, and it is still open.

Should you fix your product data before chasing AI platforms?

Storefronts, themes and AI tooling will keep shifting under everyone's feet. Tobias Lütke made a point at DotDev that landed hard for a reason. Good design removes friction so nobody feels blocked or blamed, and that applies to data as much as it does to UI. The merchants winning early are not the ones with the flashiest storefront. They are the ones whose product data an AI system can actually read.
